What is inclined orbit or advantage and disadvantage of highly inclined orbit
What is inclined orbit
- The satellite following any other orbital path , other than equatorial or polar is called as an inclined orbit.
- inclined orbit are used by many countries for their domestic communication.
- An inclined orbits is used to cover the polar regions i.e. these orbits can be used to communication satellites that can establish communication with the polar regions.

- An inclined orbits is not very frequently used.
- The height of the inclined orbits is set to cover the area of interest.
- The time for which the satellite is visible to the point on the earth is also controlled. The satellite cannot remain in continuous contact with the point on the earth , if it is rotating in the inclined orbits. Sometime they are also called as elliptical inclined orbit.
- inclined orbit is used for domestic communication in Russia, as its geographical location is near the north pole of the earth.
Advantage and Disadvantage of Highly Inclined Orbit
Advantage
- The satellite in a highly inclined elliptical orbit is used in case where we need communication in high latitude regions eg. Molniya serise of satellite in Russia . with three satellite in any orbit, they are able to provide continuous coverage over the high latitude regions. This its main advantage.
Disadvantage
- The disadvantage is that the satellite position from a point on earth does not remain same. so the earth station antenna needs to acquire and track the satellite.
